Third Grade Teachers
Reading
Students begin to read multi-syllable and grade-appropriate literature books. They develop their own points of view about what they read and discuss their ideas about a text, its characters, setting, plot, theme and central message.
Standards: CCSS ELA-Literacy RL 3.1 – 3.10; CCSS ELA-Literacy SL 3.1 – 3.6
Students will be able to:
- Describe Character Traits, Analyze Character Change
- Recount Fables, Folktales, and Myths
- Comprehend Morals in Fables, the Lesson or the Message in Folktales and Myths
- Comprehend and analyze the Central Message in a Story
Writing
Students learn the art of writing stories, and write responses that makes a claim, takes a position, or draw a conclusion using text details to support their responses.
Standards: CCSS ELA-Literacy W 3.1 – 3.10
Students will be able to:
- Write a personal narrative about an event, using descriptive details, feelings, and proper order and provide a conclusion.
- Write a story about an event, using descriptive details, feelings, and proper order and provide a conclusion
- Use the writing process to produce and publish writing.
- Use strategies for Writing Short Constructed Responses
Math
Students represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division and understand the relationship between multiplication and division.
Standards: CCSS Math 3.O.A.A1 – 3.O.A.D.9
Students will be able to:
- Gain fluency in multiplication when using 2, 5 and 9 as factors.
- Gain fluency in multiplication when multiplying by 0 or 1 and when multiplying by 10
- Use number relationships and patterns to develop reasoning strategies
- Apply and use multiplication Properties to solve problems
Science
Students take on the role of wildlife biologist and begin to learn about Animal Existence, Inheritance and Variation
Standards: Scope and Sequence Amplify Unit 2: Inheritance and Variation; Science Text Unit A and E
- Animal Classification
- Animal Needs, Growth and Development
- Animal Ecosystems and Survival
Social Studies
Students continue to learn that Geographic regions have unifying characteristics and can be studied using a variety of tools.
Standards: NYS Standard 3; NYC Scope and Sequence Unit 1 Geography 3.1a, 3.1b
Students will be able to:
- Define and describe hemispheres
- Define and understand the difference in climate and weather
- Define and describe landmarks, and other geographic features
- Apply and use Map Skills to locate identify various geographic features.
Magnet Study-
Students begin to study the land of China integrating this country of study with the underlined social studies curricula
Standards: NYS Standard 3; NYC Scope and Sequence Unit 1 Geography 3.2a, 3.2b, 3.3a, 3.3b
Students will be able to:
- Identify the geographic location of China
- Identify the location of Asia and China in relation to oceans, seas, continents and the United States
- Describe China’s Geographic features, temperature and climate.
- Construct project-based writing and art projects.
